Who is an intermediate?

Intermediate riders have some riding experience (on or off of the job) and are somewhat comfortable with their ability to negotiate certain types of terrain and accomplish basic tasks.  However, they have not experienced the variety of training and job situations that are critical for their job effectiveness and efficiency.  Their jobs require them to ride in terrain or climates in which they are uncomfortable.  Intermediate riders need to become highly aware of their own abilities and the capability of their equipment so they can best serve your agency.

  • Do some of your employees feel uneasy when challenged by:
  • side hills?
  • creek crossings?
  • rocky trails?
  • deep sand or mud?
  • Do they ever use too much front brake?
  • Do they need to know how to simplify log crossings - wet and dry -  that are now tricky?
  • Has a log water bar or a wet stick or root ever taken out an employee’s front wheel?
  • Do they ever wonder when they should brake or get on the gas to protect themselves?
  • Have they ever been sucked into a wet or dry rut at speed?

About the Class

To ensure that employees can immediately apply everything they are taught in actual riding situations, 75 percent of this class is taught on terrain similar to what employees will be riding.

Riders participate in a test of their current skill levels so they can receive maximum benefits from the agency’s investment in the course. Students will be taught any lower level skills they have not yet mastered.
